Oil Rekindles Inflation Fears, Gold Slides — Can Next Week’s Central Banks Reset the Narrative...jpg

Market Update | 23 October 2026

The Japanese yen strengthened on Friday as investors sought safety amid renewed concerns about the AI investment boom. During Asian trading, USD/JPY was around 156.28, the Dollar Index stood at 101.52, and the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield hovered near 4.953%. Brent crude, meanwhile, pushed above $114 per barrel. These are intraday observations, rather than closing prices.

The combination raises a difficult question ahead of next week’s central-bank meetings: will concerns about growth outweigh the inflation pressure coming from energy?

Falling Yields Change the Market Conversation

Asian equities weakened on Friday following an overnight technology sell-off. U.S. Treasuries attracted strong demand, with the benchmark 10-year yield dropping more than 19 basis points on Thursday—its largest daily decline since March 2023.

Our interpretation is that investors are paying closer attention to the growth consequences of a potential slowdown in AI investment. A sustained decline in U.S. yields could reduce one source of support for the dollar against the yen. Whether that move lasts will depend on incoming data and the stability of broader risk sentiment.

Gold Shows That Haven Demand Is Selective

Gold has not shared equally in the demand for protection. On Thursday, spot gold fell 2.4% to $4,041.39 per ounce by 18:05 GMT, its lowest level since August 3. Reuters linked the decline to energy-driven inflation concerns and expectations that interest rates could remain elevated. This is Thursday’s reported observation, not a live Friday quote.

The contrast matters. Different assets can respond differently to the same shock: weaker growth expectations may support sovereign bonds, while persistent inflation can complicate the outlook for gold. A broad “risk-off” label does not fully explain those differences.

The Yen’s Recovery Meets a Policy Test

The yen’s advance follows a strong Thursday session, when it gained approximately 0.75% against the dollar. Concerns about technology investment, energy supplies and France’s fiscal outlook all contributed to a cautious market environment.

The Bank of Japan meets on October 29–30 and will release its updated economic and price outlook.

For USD/JPY, the next question is whether the recovery gains support from policy expectations as well as defensive positioning. Our assessment is that a lasting move would be more convincing if it were accompanied by sustained changes in relative yields and the BOJ’s inflation assessment.

What to Watch Next

  • Whether U.S. Treasury yields remain below 5%.
  • Whether oil prices sustain their latest rise.
  • Whether the yen holds its gains as equity sentiment changes.
  • How gold responds to the competing pressures of lower yields and inflation.
  • The BOJ’s updated outlook and policy communication.
The key tension is now between growth concerns and energy-driven inflation. Which force will central banks—and currency markets—give greater weight to next?
