How do you pick your first broker & demo account as a complete beginner?

Hi everyone, I'm completely new to forex/gold trading and trying to figure out where to start before risking any real money.
A few questions for those who've been through this stage:
  1. What criteria matter most when choosing a broker as a beginner (regulation, spreads, minimum deposit, platform)? Are there any well-regulated brokers you'd specifically recommend for someone starting out?
  2. How long did you personally spend on a demo account before going live? Was there a specific milestone (consistent profit, win rate, etc.) that told you "okay, I'm ready"?
  3. Any common mistakes newbies make when picking a broker or moving from demo to live that I should watch out for?
Appreciate any advice, trying to learn the right way instead of jumping in blind.

  1. This depends on what you need. If you don't know what you need, then you shouldn't worry about this at all - it's too early for you to open a live account anyway.
  2. There is no set term. You go live when you are consistently profitable on demo and know what you are doing. Sometimes, it makes sense to go live before you are consistently profitable to test your strategy on a small live account in real market conditions.
  3. The most common mistake is going live without knowing what you are doing and losing your money. The second most common mistake is falling for scams that are abundant in this industry.

I wouldn't really recommend using a demo account as it's different from real trading. Instead, you should start with micro lots, small account but real trading so you'll learn much more and faster.
And... only trade with tier 1 regulated brokers.

For me easy withdrawals would come first, then spreads and platform. I wouldn’t worry too much about minimum deposit.
With demo, I think the main thing is not how many weeks you use it, but whether you can follow the same risk rules consistently without changing strategy every few days. Big mistake is going live too fast or choosing a broker just because they offer high leverage or some bonus. Start small when you do go live because real money feels very different from demo.

props to u for starting out by looking at brokers and testing the waters on a demo account, already put u ahead of most donkeys tbh. demo's decent for learning the buttons and testing if ur strategy actually works, but it don't prep u for the absolute mental melt when real cash starts bleeding. once u get the hang of it, seriously just chuck a few quid into a micro account to actually feel that real money sting, completely different game. when ur picking a broker just make sure cashouts actually clear without hassle and they've got proper regulation, never get lured in by some mental deposit bonus scam.

I’d focus on learning the platform and practicing good risk habits on demo first. The broker matters, but building a solid routine before using real money matters even more.

Focus on regulation, withdrawals, fees, and a reliable platform. Use demo until you can follow your strategy consistently, then start live with very small risk. Biggest mistake is rushing in and overleveraging.
