"spread" on BTC/USD

Hi all, very new to trading and also to MT4...

I'm trying to figure out why, when I open a long position it starts out anywhere up to $100 ABOVE the price I bought at, and why when I open a short, the opening price is correct but my profit margin is in defecit AS IF I'd opened the trade $100 or so lower.

Is this to do with my broker's "spread"?

Should I be looking for a better broker (currently EagleFX)?

BTW this is all on demo account so far.

You open long trades at the Ask price and short trades at the Bid price - so, yes, the reason for the issues you are experiencing is spread.

Indeed, I'm now trying IC Markets on demo... spreads are MUCH better

You just subtract the Bid price from the Ask price to get the spread value.
