Today, Sony Corp announced that it will cut about 15 percent of its mobile phone workforce to grow its smartphone base. As the demand for smartphones continues to grow at rapid pace, the company said the move will allow them to reduce costs and “accelerate” its growth in the market, the Wall Street Journal reported.

1,000 Jobs Cut from Swedish Workforce

Sony notified Swedish authorities that it will be cutting about 1,000 jobs, including 350 consultants, from its Lund branch. This comes as it moves its mobile phone headquarters from the country to Tokyo following the company’s payout of $1.32 billion to take full control of the Sony Ericsson joint venture.

According to the WSJ, Sony will focus on new handsets in the coming years, differentiating itself from Apple and competitor Samsung by integrating more entertainment options like games. Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai says that he expects the restructuring and focus on mobile products, including tablets and PC’s, to significantly boost profits within three years.
